8 Common Everyday Things That Age Us Faster
The everyday factors that can age us all without us even knowing.
Everyone ages at different speeds and there are many different things that age us. This is down to different factors. Lifestyle, stress, environment and genetics can all play a part in how fast we age. It’s probable that in life we will all meet the 80 year old who is still active and vigorous. We also meet the 40 or 50 year old who is showing serious signs of poor health and decline. If these people and their bodies’ were machines we could see that the older one has been well maintained and looked after. On the other hand the younger one has been misused and abused. The signs of aging and wear become much more evident on a person who does not look after themselves.
There are many things in life you can do to better look after yourself. You should avoid the things that age us. These will not only help you age at a slower rate. They will also help you avoid some of the serious health issues that needlessly develop as we grow older.
Just as there are thing that can help you age better there are errors you accidently make that age you faster. Most of these mistakes that age us we don’t even notice. Most people do them needlessly. In fact many are considered an everyday part of modern life.
Here are the things to avoid if you wish to age slower and better.
1. Lack of Sleep
A lack of good sleep is one of the most common things that age us. Not getting enough sleep can have terrible results for your health. Poor sleep (not sleeping soundly) can also have very negative health effects. Sleep is critical for living a life that is not only healthier but happier and more productive as well. Sleep is essential for recharging your body. It is also important for maintaining a healthy brain.
A lack of sleep has been shown to create numerous health problems. It can also make existing problems much worse. People who do not get enough sleep can find themselves gaining weight. This of course can cause numerous other problems for the body as well as aging it faster. Some studies have also suggested that a lack of sleep can also greatly increase the risk of cancer.
If you wish to avoid these issues always get at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.
2. Lack of Exercise and Low Levels Of Physical Activity
We all know that doctors and health experts recommend we exercise to stay healthy. Many people today work in office environments. As such they spend most of the day sitting. This physical inactivity can cause numerous health problems. Weight gain is the obvious one. Being overweight of course speeds the aging process.
Spending a long amount of time also deactivates the skeletal muscles in the lower parts of the body. This can cause numerous problems for the metabolism. The answer to this is simply to get more exercise and to move about more during the day. Use the stairs instead of the elevator when possible. Take a walk during your lunch break. Walk to colleagues and talk face to face instead of emailing or calling them.
All these things can help keep us active during the day and maintain a healthy body.
3. Eating Junk Food
A bad diet is a sure fire way to age faster than is biologically natural. We all know the damage that diet full of junk food and snacks can cause. The hectic pace of modern life can make fast food the easier and more convenient option. The fact that is far easier to find junk food is also a big problem. These foods not only can damage the body but they also contain far more calories than we actually need.
If you wish to fight the aging process replace all these junk foods with natural and organic food. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are an obvious example. Try to reduce or remove your consumption of processed foods. These processed foods are packed with all sorts of things we just don’t need that can age us faster. Additives and preservatives contain in these food are not needed and can damage the body. They are also high in salt and sugar.
Eating high levels of red meat can also age you faster. If you do eat a lot of pork and beef try and replace it with meat and chicken instead. It’s no mistake that people in the Mediterranean or in Japan live much longer than the global average. Diets rich in fresh fish age an excellent way to live both longer and better.
4. Eating Too Much
Consuming a greater amount of food than we need not only leads to obesity. The intake of more calories than we actually need can age the body faster than it naturally would. Eating too much is one of the mostcommon things that age us. Eat healthy foods in the correct portion to not only maintain a healthy weight but also to age at a slower, more natural rate. There are in fact people who deliberately restrict their calorie intake in the hope of living longer. We don’t recommend you take it to this extreme. Instead, keep an eye on your portions and look at the calorie levels on food labels.

5. Exposure To Toxins
Living in the modern world can expose us to different toxic chemicals. We encounter these in the environment around us all the time. We can also consume them in our food. We know that exposure to high levels of toxins can kill us outright. That’s why there are so many warning signs and labels to keep us safe.
We now know that expose to lower levels of toxins can cause chaos for our health and damage our bodies. They are one of the things that age us over time. Over time these toxins can build up in our body fat, blood and other body tissues. They then can damage our health by doing things like altering our hormonal levels.
To avoid toxins try to eat organic foods and avoid plastic packaging. Particles of plastic from this packaging can enter our body through the food is has contact with.
Suffering from stress seems like an inevitable part of modern life. Stress can cause numerous health problems that get worse over time. Hairloss, weakened immune system and even memory loss can be some of the symptoms of stress.
Stress can also prematurely age us by damaging our DNA. When we get stressed out or are suffering from anxiety our body responds by releasing cortisol. This is also known as the stress hormone. This hormone can damage the telomeres. These are the protective casing at the ends of the DNA strand. As they are damaged our cells begin to age faster.

7. Drinking and Smoking
I think most people accept the fact that drinking and smoking can age us prematurely. In fact, most of us have probably seen the terrible results these activities can have in those who engage in them. Of all the things that age us drinking and smoking are perhaps the most obvious.
By simply avoiding them you can be leaps ahead of those who do drink or smoke. If you are interested in fighting aging these should be the first things you give up. It is likely that the good done by other anti aging behaviours and treatments will be undone if you do not give these up.
These addictions not only cause long term damage. They can damage the body very quickly. Smoking a single cigarette can begin to damage your DNA in as little as15 minutes. If you make one change in your life make sure you quit smoking. Imagine the damage caused by drinking and smoking over years if not decades. A person who does drink and smoke will suffer from numerous health problems that build up to make it far more likely they will die much sooner. Of all the everyday things that age us smoking is perhaps the most harmful.
8. Other Health Risks
Many of us are susceptible to a wide variety of health problems. We can alleviate them through lifestyle changes but for some there will always be a risk. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar can be risk factors than many and can go undetected. If they do they can lead to serious damage and even death.
The problem many people have is they don’t even know they have these health problems until it’s too late. It can take a heart attack or stroke to alert some to these issues. By then it can sadly be too late and they can die from conditions they didn’t even know they had. Consult you doctor and arrange screening tests to see if you are suffering from them or are at risk.
If you are at risk follow your doctor’s advice. Changes to diet, exercise and lifestyle can help you see off these common health problems. You can live a longer, happier and healthier life if you do.
There are many things that can age us. Many of these we don’t even realise effect us at all. We hope you found the information in this article helpful in you efforts to live longer and live a better life.
